We enjoyed a lovely Memorial Day Sunday up in Harper's Ferry, WV. Site of many famous skirmishes in the Civil War. However, more exciting to me, a Montana girl, was an East Coast Lewis and Clark Trail sighting!!! We love us some Lewis and Clark history around Montana, and it is always fun to find some far from home. :)
Who knew that Lewis's famous Iron Boat was forged right there in Harper's Ferry and he came there to design and build said famous boat. Here it is Gramp.....we are pretty sure you aren't going to find it buried in the banks of the Missouri. It looks pretty flimsy to have lasted this long....
For those of you who don't know the story....Lewis and his band of merry men had to bury the boat in a cache somewhere around Great Falls as they had too much "stuff" to trek over the mountains (and the boat was leaky since there wasn't enough pine sap there in Montana). They had planned to dig it back up on their return trip, but there is some debate as to whether or not that happened. Historians have long searched, and have never found, Lewis's favorite boat. :) My Dad is always thinking that he might just see it one day when he is out on the river. :)

That's so cool! We read about them burying the boat earlier this year. The area looks beautiful, but I don't know that the leaves will be changing yet when we're up there in October. Is it as hilly as I've heard?...

Still have not found that boat in Great Falls..probably long gone and the iron used for something like arrow heads!!
